The inception of high definition programming has sharpened and clarified the way we watch television today. The crispness and clarity at which programs are broadcast through this digital medium is above and beyond analog or any other broadcast offering. It has the best quality of resolution at 720 lines. Now there are some that are as high of a resolution as 1080. DVD's are 480 lines while VCR's are only 240 lines in quality of resolution. This type of resolution gives the most life-like version attainable of any broadcast medium. Images are more real and have a quality of making you feel like you're right there. The sound is enhanced and of a greater quality much like a CD compared to a tape.

Experts have estimated that over eighty percent of all American homes will be equipped with televisions capable of viewing HDTV by 2010. However, HDTV is not an entirely new concept. ABC was one of the first to use the technology in 1998 with the broadcast of 101 Dalmatians. Also, major television stations have been broadcasting many of its most popular shows through this medium for quite awhile. Eventually, all broadcasting will be done in this matter. Not all stations are on the HDTV bandwagon yet. Some still cast in normal resolution, which is disappointing to viewers who have purchased the upgraded television and means to view it.
It's true that viewers will need a television that is capable of supporting high definition programming. Fortunately, prices have fallen to underneath $500 and many more areas have cable and satellite companies able to support the enhanced picture. Most of the programming is sent to viewers in 16:9 ratio, which is similar to what is viewed at movie theatres. Also, there is a 4:3 ratio, which is more of an average resolution for most televisions.
